1. Goals of Anger Control Training a) Explain how being angry and aggressive can lead to trouble. b) Problems with authorities (Police – School) c) Issues with Peers d) How you feel about yourself 2. Being able to achieve control over anger is worthwhile a) Evander Holyfield b) Michael Jordan c) Jackie Chan d) Dr. MLK Jr. 1) Having more self-control does not make you a “wimp or push-over” 2) These people would not have achieved the things they did if it were not for their self-control over anger. 3. Greater self-control means Greater Personal Power a) More power when you are in control of your reaction to others b) Despite the attempts of others to provoke you . c) By being aggressive, you allow others to control you 4. Rules and Procedure a) Each session is about 1 hour b) Depending on time allowed will be 10 weeks – maybe meeting twice a week c) Expectations – 1) Participate actively 2) Have respect for the other participants 3) Homework will be given and used in the next session 4) Hassle Logs should be completed 5) Record details about conflict situations 6) Different techniques for anger reduction are taught a) Explanation b) practice in form of Role Playing- taken from Hassle Log so that the next time the situation or a similar one occurs, they will have the choice to do something other than get angry. 5. The A-B-Cs of Anger - each conflict situation has 3 steps: a) A=What triggered the problem? What led up to it? b) B=What did you do? (the actual response to A) c) C=What were the consequences (to you and to the other person) d) E + R = O e) You only have control over your response to any situation. f) How you respond to any conflict situation can determine if that situation has a positive or negative outcome.
